Menopause & Hormones: An Ayurvedic Approach to Balance

Susan Lanigan | MAR 6

Menopause is a natural transition in a woman’s life. Yet, for many, it can bring symptoms that feel anything but balanced — hot flashes, mood swings, sleep disruptions, fatigue, and changes in metabolism.

Ayurveda, the ancient healing system of India, offers a gentle and holistic approach to supporting the body during this phase. Rather than simply treating symptoms, Ayurveda looks at the whole person, supporting hormonal balance by restoring harmony among the body, mind, and nervous system.

During peri menopause and menopause, the body naturally shifts toward increased Vata energy in Ayurveda. When Vata becomes excessive, women may experience anxiety, insomnia, dryness, irregular cycles, or feeling “unsettled” in their body. Ayurveda focuses on grounding, nourishing, and stabilizing the system during this time.

Some Ayurvedic approaches that can support hormonal balance include:

• Nourishing, warm foods that support digestion and hormonal health
• Daily routines that calm the nervous system and regulate the body’s rhythms
• Herbal support traditionally used to help the body adapt to hormonal shifts
• Therapeutic bodywork and massage that support circulation, stress reduction, and lymphatic flow
• Mindful movement practices like yoga and breath work

This phase of life can be an opportunity for deeper self-care, reflection, and renewal. With the right support, women can move through menopause feeling more balanced, energized, and connected to themselves.

At Shiloh Ayurveda, I offer Ayurvedic consultations designed to help women understand their unique constitution and create supportive lifestyle practices for hormone balance, stress reduction, and overall well-being.
